Many years ago, while I was studying at University, we had a fire in one of the halls of residence, which spread through the ducts. Fortunately, nobody lost the their life, but it was an extremely serious situation that could have been averted by the installation of duct smoke detectors. Needless to say, every building on the campus was fitted with these devices soon afterwards, making everyone a little safer. The importance of these devices cannot be overstated, and they should be an integral part of any fire safety system.
The Home and Garden Guide is packed with information, tips and reviews designed to make DIY a whole lot easier.

Duct Smoke Detectors :: Essential Fire Safety Equipment
If you have a central air conditioning system, you need to make sure the ventilation ducts are monitored for smoke with a duct smoke detector. If a fire occurs in or near duct work, the air handling unit can quickly spread smoke throughout the building and make a bad situation worse. Both supply and return air need to be protected, and your HVAC or central air conditioner should be configured to shut down if smoke is detected in the system. In commercial buildings, this can be paramount to complying with fire safety codes. Find out about duct smoke detectors and ensure the safety of your AHU or central air system.
